Plot summary
Max Vatan flies for the Royal Canadian Air Force and works in intelligence; in 1942 he is sent to Morocco to kill a German ambassador in Casablanca. A wife is part of his cover, so he is partnered with Marianne Beauséjour, a French Resistance fighter who left France after her resistance group was destroyed. The two live as a married couple and rehearse their story, and Marianne secures an invitation to a party where the ambassador, Hobar, will be among the guests. When they meet him, she presents Max as her French assistant and does most of the talking, while both keep preparing for the operation. She also criticizes his French accent.

Screenwriter Steven Knight based the film on a story he first heard at 21, when his girlfriend's aunt told him how her brother fell for a French woman who became pregnant with his child; it was discovered she was a German spy, and on orders from his superiors he killed her.- Marion Cotillard took firearm training but was never fully comfortable holding the weapon, and filming of the assassination scene was interrupted when she "freaked out"; Robert Zemeckis told her to put the lock on the machine gun to ease her discomfort.
- Scenes set in Casablanca were shot in Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands: production designer Gary Freeman said locations in Morocco proved a challenge because the architecture of cities like Casablanca and Tangiers had changed significantly since the time period the film is set in.
- Every outfit in the film was custom-made, including the silver cross worn by Brad Pitt, made by London-based jeweller Stephen Einhorn; several versions of each costume were built, with eight versions of one long green dress worn by Marion Cotillard.
