Plot summary

For centuries, sea beasts have risen from the water to attack humankind, and hunting crews sail out to stop them. The Inevitable is the most famous hunting crew, led by Captain Crow, alongside first mate Sarah Sharpe and Jacob Holland, his adopted son. After a hunt nearly kills him, Crow promises Jacob the captaincy once they kill the Red Bluster, the beast that took his eye. At Three Bridges, the King and Queen tell the crew that the naval vessel Imperator, commanded by Admiral Eric Hornagold, will replace them. Jacob asks for one more chance at the Red Bluster, and the Crown makes it a contest between the two crews. Not long after the Inevitable departs, the hunters find an orphan named Maisie Brumble aboard, drawn by the example of her late parents, who were hunters themselves.

To give Captain Crow his wrinkles, the animators reworked the inkline tool used on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse into crease-lines, adding curve depth in a more sculptural way around the character's face.
Shipboard scenes in The Sea Beast used a newly developed camera tool that counterbalanced the camera, plus a pivoting tool called Sea Legs built for characters balancing on moving surfaces.
An animation rig first made for the webs of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was reused on The Sea Beast for the ropes of the ship, giving more flexibility and control over how much rope appeared.
For the film's look, the artists drew on N. C. Wyeth's artwork for the wide open oceans and Caspar David Friedrich for the low contrast of its cinematic look.
