Plot summary
The Mariner is the only man left alive when the pirates of the Black Freighter attack his ship. He comes ashore on an island, where he agonizes over the thought that the freighter is bound for Davidstown, the home port he sails from and where his family lives. By his own reckoning he cannot reach them in time to save them, so he settles on a different aim: to return to Davidstown and take revenge on the crew of the Black Freighter. He has no ship and no crew, and open water lies between the island and the harbor. He sets out to cross it.
