Plot summary
In 1891, a string of bombings blamed on political radicals pushes France and Germany toward war. Sherlock Holmes intercepts a bomb meant for the surgeon Dr. Hoffmanstahl and his former lover Irene Adler, and identifies their employer as Professor James Moriarty. Holmes tells Dr. John Watson that he has linked murders, attacks and business acquisitions to the professor. At Watson's bachelor party he meets his brother Mycroft, then meets the Romani fortune-teller Madame Simza, who was the intended recipient of a letter from her brother René, and drives off an assassin sent after her. After Watson marries Mary Morstan, Holmes meets Moriarty, who threatens to kill Watson and Mary. Moriarty's men ambush the couple on their honeymoon train.
