Plot summary
Collette Andrews asks Jack Lawrence, a lawyer and her former boyfriend, to find her teenage son Scott, who has run off with his girlfriend Nikki, and tells Jack that Scott is his son. Jack refuses at first, then agrees when work keeps him in San Francisco. Collette calls Dale Putley, a writer and another former boyfriend, who is attempting suicide when the phone rings. Both men start looking for Scott and meet while questioning Russ, Nikki's father. Each thinks he is searching for a different missing boy, so they team up. Nikki's mother Shirley says Nikki followed the rock band Sugar Ray on the road.

- Executives at 20th Century Fox balked at the premise of Les Compères, in which the runaway boy's stepfather has no desire to look for him, so in the American remake the boy's mother was made divorced to create a situation accepted as "moral".
- After seeing the finished film, Warner Bros. kept reshooting and enhancing Fathers' Day, an unnamed studio executive said; the studio had approved the Williams, Crystal and Reitman package through CAA without scrutinizing the production.
