Plot summary
Valerie Solanas grows up in difficult circumstances and studies psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she begins writing and forms a radical feminist worldview. She moves to New York City and lives as a sex worker in the bohemian underworld of Lower Manhattan. Her friend Stevie introduces her to Candy Darling, who brings her to Andy Warhol. Solanas writes the SCUM Manifesto, a call to overthrow capitalism and eradicate all men, and finishes a play, Up Your Ass, that she wants Warhol to produce. She also meets Maurice Girodias, the owner of Olympia Press, who wants her to write an erotic novel, and Warhol gives her a small role in his film I, a Man.

Mary Harron said the last line of the film was not her choice: she wanted a deadpan line saying Valerie Solanas died in a welfare hotel in San Francisco in 1988, but the young women at Killer Films wanted to end on a positive note.
