Plot summary
An early-warning radar in the Pacific detects an unidentified intercontinental ballistic missile, at first taken for a North Korean test, then tracked into low orbit on a course toward Chicago. Captain Olivia Walker is the oversight officer at the White House Situation Room. The president joins as the alert level reaches DEFCON 2. Secretary of Defense Reid Baker begins the continuity of government protocol, and FEMA official Cathy Rogers is among the federal employees evacuated. Deputy National Security Advisor Jake Baerington, taken to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, argues against retaliation until the missile's origin can be confirmed.
