Plot summary
Mallory Wilson lives with a father who abuses her and a mother who does not protect her. Mickey Knox, a meat deliveryman who calls at the house, falls in love with her, and the two become a couple. Mickey is picked up for stealing a car and taken to prison, but he gets out and comes back to her. The pair kill her father and mother and leave her young brother, Kevin, alive, then hold a wedding of their own on a bridge. On the road they pull in at a desert diner in New Mexico, where two men harass Mallory while she dances; she beats one of them, Mickey joins in, and the pair kill everyone there but one customer. Detective Jack Scagnetti is on their trail.

- Tarantino sold an option on his script to producers Jane Hamsher and Don Murphy for $10,000, after trying and failing to direct it himself for $500,000.
- Shooting the point-of-view scene in which Mallory runs into the wire mesh hurt two camera operators in a row: director of photography Robert Richardson broke his finger, and the replacement cameraman cut his eye.

An alternate ending was filmed but never used, in which Mickey and Mallory are shot dead by Arliss Howard's character. Stone decided against it because he believed the 1990s were a time when the bad guys got away with it.- Almost from the day it opened the film was accused of encouraging murderers in North America, among them the perpetrators of the 1997 Heath High School shooting and the Columbine High School massacre, whose killers code-named their attack "NBK" after the title.
- The famous Coca-Cola polar bear advertisement Northern Lights appears twice in the film. According to Stone, Coca-Cola approved its use without a full idea of what the film was about, and the company was furious when it saw the finished picture.
- Editing lasted roughly 11 months and left the finished film with almost 3,000 cuts, where most films have between 600 and 700.
- Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, who produced the soundtrack with Stone, reportedly watched the film more than 50 times to get himself in the mood for the work.
