Plot summary
In 1306 Robert the Bruce holds the crown of Scots, and English forces have overrun the country. At a truce meeting in a chapel, John Comyn offers to drop his own claim to the throne in return for land and money; Robert already knows Comyn means to hand him to the English, and the two fight. By the winter of 1313 Robert is down to a handful of men, camped in the woods. He tells them the war is finished and sends them home, but three of them decide the bounty on his head is worth more than their loyalty. Their ambush leaves him badly wounded by Will, and he hides in a cave. Scot Macfie, a boy in the hills, has seen Robert pass through the woods and keeps away; his father died fighting for him.
