Plot summary
Bettie Page grows up in a religious family in Nashville, Tennessee, and longs to leave. In 1949 she moves to New York City and takes acting lessons. An amateur photographer, Jerry Tibbs, spots her while she walks at Coney Island and asks her to model; he suggests the haircut with bangs that becomes her trademark. Nature photographers, among them Bunny Yeager, hire her, and she undresses whenever asked. Her pictures reach Paula and Irving Klaw, who sell movie stills and memorabilia but also handle fetish photographs and short films. Their own model Maxie teaches her the trade, and Bettie poses in leather corsets and thigh-high boots with whips and chains for the photographer John Willie. In 1955 a Senate hearing led by Estes Kefauver, looking into pornography's effect on American youth, calls her to testify.
