Plot summary

Charles Highway is a confident, intelligent nineteen-year-old, finishing sixth form college and bound for Oxford, and he maps out his romances in computer files and detailed plans. Before his next birthday he wants a woman older than himself, and his new target is Rachel Noyce, a beautiful American he becomes infatuated with. Rachel already has a boyfriend, DeForest, who treats her badly, and she is not receptive to his advances at first. Charles has a string of former girlfriends; around him are his sister Jenny, an eccentric brother-in-law named Norman, his friend and mentor Geoff, and his father Gordon, who keeps a mistress.
