Plot summary
In 1892 Ireland, Joseph Donnelly dreams of owning land. After his father dies, men sent by landlord Daniel Christie burn the family home over unpaid rent. Joseph goes to the Christie house to kill him. Christie's daughter Shannon drives a pitchfork into his leg, and she and her mother Nora treat his wound, planning to have him hanged. Shannon resists her parents' wish to make her a refined lady and wants to go to America, where land is free. Stephen Chase, the Christies' estate manager, intercepts Joseph when he tries to flee and challenges him to a duel at dawn. Shannon comes for him in a cart and talks him into sailing with her. She needs a servant and a protector. Aboard the ship, a passenger named McGuire tells them the Oklahoma land is claimed by racing for it.

- For the Oklahoma Land Rush scene, filmed on a quarter-mile-wide set, the production used 800 riders and extras, 900 horses plus mules and oxen, 200 wagons and nine cameras; four people broke bones and one horse died during filming.
- Ron Howard's grandfather took part in the Land Run of 1893, 99 years before the film came out, and was the reason the land-race plotline was included in the movie.
- Far and Away was the first film shot in Panavision Super 70, and the first film shot in 70 mm in a decade, since Tron in 1982.
- The slow-motion shots of the Oklahoma land rush were filmed with an Arriflex 765 camera capable of 100 frames per second.
- Selections from the film's soundtrack were later used in the trailers for other films, including Rudy (1993), Getting Even with Dad (1994), Circle of Friends (1995), Treasure Planet (2002) and Charlotte's Web (2006).
- After shooting wrapped in Billings, Montana, the production moved to Dublin, Ireland, where Ardmore Studios in Wicklow stood in for interiors and the streets of Boston were shot in Dublin.
