Biography

Danny DeVito is an American actor, comedian, and filmmaker, born in Neptune Township, New Jersey, and raised in Asbury Park. He trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began acting off-Broadway in 1969. His breakthrough came as Louie De Palma on Taxi, which ran from 1978 to 1983 and won him an Emmy and a Golden Globe. His films include One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Terms of Endearment (1983), Batman Returns (1992), Matilda (1996), L.A. Confidential (1997), and Big Fish (2003), and he voiced Phil in Hercules (1997). He directed Throw Momma from the Train (1987) and Matilda (1996). In 1991 he co-founded Jersey Films, and he shared an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture as a producer of Erin Brockovich (2000). Since 2006 he has played Frank Reynolds on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and in 2017 he received a Tony nomination for The Price.

    DeVito got the role of Louie De Palma on Taxi by astonishing the show's creators during his audition, asking them "Who wrote this sh*t?" and then throwing the script on the table.

  2. A role that slipped away

    In 1997, DeVito negotiated a $13-million deal to direct and star in Mystery Men, but the talks fell apart over the soundtrack's producer. He said he really wanted it and walked away.

  3. First role

    DeVito played Gregory Solomon in a Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Arthur Miller's The Price, which was his Broadway debut. He acted opposite Mark Ruffalo and Tony Shalhoub.

  4. Behind the camera

    DeVito wrote a 12-page story for the anthology comic Gotham City Villains, and the tale centered on the Penguin and Catwoman.
