Plot summary
Lydia Deetz presents a paranormal talk show and has grown distant from her daughter Astrid, who questions her mother's abilities and whether ghosts exist at all, after the death of her father Richard in the Amazon. During a broadcast, Lydia glimpses Betelgeuse, the spirit who long ago wanted to marry her. Her stepmother Delia then brings word that Charles Deetz was killed by a shark, and the family travels back to Winter River, where Lydia's boyfriend Rory pushes her to wed him on Halloween. Astrid strikes up a friendship with a local boy, Jeremy Frazier. In the Netherworld, Betelgeuse runs a call center of shrunken-headed staff and remains fixed on Lydia, while the detective Wolf Jackson tells him his former wife, the occultist Delores LaFerve, is taking the souls of the dead and hunting him.

- Winona Ryder accepted the role of Joyce Byers in Stranger Things in 2015 on the condition that the Duffer Brothers would let her take a break if a Beetlejuice sequel was greenlit, as she and Tim Burton had been discussing one since 2000.
- Two Beetlejuice sequel scripts were commissioned in 1990, and in screenwriter Warren Skaaren's Beetlejuice in Love, Beetlejuice pursues Julia after her boyfriend Leo falls to his death proposing on the Eiffel Tower; Skaaren died shortly after turning in his first draft.
