Plot summary
Jerry Falk, 21, lives in New York City and earns money writing material for comedians while hoping to finish a serious novel. He is in love with Amanda Chase, an aspiring actress he met while both were seeing other people. On their anniversary she arrives late, says she has already eaten, and informs him that her mother, Paula, is moving into their apartment; Paula soon fills the place with a piano and rehearsals for a nightclub act. Jerry's manager, Harvey Wexler, pushes him to extend their contract for seven more years. Through work Jerry meets David Dobel, a 60-year-old schoolteacher and aspiring comedy writer who takes long walks with him and delivers eccentric philosophical advice about self-reliance and about life being like anything else.
