Biography

Michael Keaton is an American actor who started in Pittsburgh television and theater before breaking through in the comedy Night Shift (1982) and becoming a leading man in Mr. Mom (1983). Pigeonholed as a comic lead, he changed his image in 1988 with the title role in Beetlejuice and an acclaimed dramatic performance in Clean and Sober (1988). He then played Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), parts that drew widespread praise after early complaints from fans. His 1990s output included The Paper (1994), Multiplicity (1996) and Jackie Brown (1997). For Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014), he won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award. He went on to Spotlight (2015), The Founder (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020). He also directed The Merry Gentleman (2008) and Knox Goes Away (2024), and won a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe for Dopesick (2021).

    Keaton chose his professional surname by opening a phone book to the letter K, seeing Keaton, and deciding to stop looking, a change required by SAG rules because Michael Douglas and Mike Douglas already worked under those names.

  2. First role

    Keaton's first screen appearance was a small non-speaking part in the Joan Rivers film Rabbit Test in 1978, and his next break came opposite Jim Belushi in the short-lived series Working Stiffs, which led to Night Shift.

  3. A role that slipped away

    Woody Allen gave Keaton the lead in The Purple Rose of Cairo, but once filming started Allen decided Keaton was "too modern" and had Jeff Daniels reshoot those scenes.

    Keaton was set to play Batman a third time and even showed up for a costume fitting, but he left the franchise once Burton was dropped as director. Warner Bros. offered him $15 million, he refused, and Val Kilmer took the role in Batman Forever.
