Plot summary
Word of Jamaica reaches Moosehead Pond when a flock of ducks stops there on its way south, and Pam Mallard tells her husband Mack that he should open his eyes to the world before the chance passes. Mack refuses to migrate. He has kept Dax and Gwen close to the pond and told them not to roam past it. That night his uncle Dan persuades him otherwise, and Dan comes along as the family leaves New England. The Mallards set off and soon realize they are flying the wrong way. A thunderstorm sends them for shelter under a boardwalk in a swamp, where Erin, an elderly great blue heron, invites them to spend the night in her shack.
