Plot summary
Henry Moon robs banks, steals horses and cattle in late 1860s Texas, and a posse catches him as he rides for the Mexican border. Sentenced to hang in Longhorn, he learns that local law spares any convicted man except a murderer if a woman agrees to marry him and answer for his behavior. Townswomen look him over at the gallows. Julia Tate, a genteel woman from the Southern United States, agrees to wed him and take charge of him, and she wants his labor in the gold mine beneath her property. The sheriff warns Moon what will follow if he leaves her, and the pair settle into a partnership of need with nothing in common.
