Plot summary
Lawrence Garfield, known as Larry the Liquidator, buys up companies and sells their assets. His computer Carmen tracks New England Wire and Cable, a family firm in Rhode Island run by chairman Andrew Jorgenson. The company's wire and cable division is failing, and Garfield judges its assets to be worth more than its market value. He visits the plant and proposes closing that division; Jorgenson refuses. Garfield then begins buying shares to gain control of the company. Jorgenson's companion Bea Sullivan asks her daughter, corporate attorney Kate Sullivan, for help, but Jorgenson trusts his traditional methods and his twenty percent stake. Kate meets Garfield in his office, threatens a lawsuit while flirting with him, and wins a two-week pause on his buying.
