Plot summary
Barkley Michaelson studies anthropology at college, a choice his father Eli, a chemistry professor, treats as a failure and answers with abuse. Eli's Nobel Prize in Chemistry sends him and his wife Sarah, a forensic psychiatrist, to Sweden; Barkley misses the flight. Thaddeus James, who says he is Eli's son by a former colleague's wife and Barkley's half-brother, holds Barkley and demands millions from Eli, driven less by money than by revenge. Barkley is drawn to City Hall, a local poet and artist. Police detective Max Mariner investigates the kidnapping, and the Michaelsons' tenant, George Gastner, is learning to manage his obsessive-compulsive disorder.
