Plot summary
Joe Moore runs a crew of thieves with Bobby Blane, Donnie "Pinky" Pincus and his wife Fran. During a New York City jewelry robbery, Joe removes his mask to distract the last employee, and a security camera captures his face. He cannot get the video before the crew flees. The image and a witness can identify him, so Joe steps away from theft and plans to leave on his sailboat with Fran. His fence Mickey Bergman, whose garment business serves as a front, objects. Bergman has costs from preparing another robbery, so he holds back the crew's share from the jewelry job. The crew must take on a plane carrying a large gold shipment. Bergman demands that his nephew Jimmy Silk join them. Joe agrees. Jimmy shows interest in Fran, and Bergman and Jimmy question whether Joe's abilities are slipping.

- Franchise Pictures agreed to finance David Mamet's Heist only on the condition that it starred Gene Hackman and Danny DeVito.
