Plot summary

Six months after their adventure in Colombia, the novelist Joan Wilder and Jack Colton are living aboard his yacht, and the romance between them has cooled. Joan is blocked on her next book and wants to return to New York; Jack would rather keep sailing. At a book signing she meets Omar Khalifa, a ruler who asks her to write the story of his life, and she leaves with him over Jack's objections. Jack then crosses paths with Ralph, the swindler from the Colombian trip. A man named Tarak comes to Jack with word of Omar's plans and of a fabled treasure called the Jewel of the Nile. After a bomb wrecks the boat, Jack and Ralph go after Joan and the jewel.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Jewel of the Nile (1985)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Kathleen Turner thought the sequel's script was terrible and tried to walk away during pre-production. Twentieth Century Fox threatened her with a $25 million breach-of-contract lawsuit, and producer Michael Douglas stepped in to get a rewrite done.
  • Turner was also unhappy that Diane Thomas, who wrote Romancing the Stone, was not hired back because Michael Douglas judged her fee too high; Thomas was eventually brought in only to consult on changes.
  • A huge night scene in North Africa took hours to set up and was played out with the whole cast and crew in place before someone noticed there was no film in the cameras. Producer Michael Douglas erupted, and the scene had to be shot again on another day.
  • About two weeks before shooting started, a plane scouting Moroccan locations crashed and killed production designer Richard Dawking and production manager Brian Coates. The film is dedicated to them and to Romancing the Stone writer Diane Thomas, killed in a car crash six weeks before release.
  • The F-16 fighter the heroes escape in was a fake built from wood, styrofoam and fibreglass, mounted on a car chassis and driven by a 350-cubic-inch Chevrolet engine.
  • The Jewel of the Nile has one odd distinction in home video history: it was the last film ever issued on RCA's SelectaVision CED disc format.
  • The film winks at its own theme song when Joan tells Jack that when the going gets tough she does not know what the tough do, and Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito all turned up alongside Billy Ocean in the MTV video.
