Plot summary
No firm has hired Rudy Baylor when he finishes at Memphis State law school, so he takes work at a bar whose owner, Bruiser Stone, runs an ambulance-chasing practice and brings him on as an associate. Bruiser pairs him with Deck Shifflet, a former insurance adjuster with a law degree who never passed the bar exam after six attempts. Rudy brings a bad faith claim against Great Benefit, which refused to pay for a bone marrow transplant for Donny Ray Black, the son of Dot and Buddy Black. With Bruiser gone and Rudy's own license still pending, the two open their own office and file the suit, facing Leo F. Drummond of the firm Tinley Britt.
