Plot summary
Larry Mann and Phil Cooper are longtime friends and veteran salesmen for an industrial lubricants company, in Wichita, Kansas, for a manufacturers' convention. They hold a hospitality suite and wait for Dick Fuller, the chief executive Larry calls the Big Kahuna, hoping his order can revive the company's flagging sales. Bob Walker, lent to them from the research department, is young, earnest and Baptist. Larry has money troubles he mentions only obliquely; Phil has come through a recovery program for alcoholism. The two coach Bob on their pitch and hand him their business cards. Then Dick Fuller invites Bob, and only Bob, to a private party at another hotel.
