Plot summary
A secret genetic experiment tries to create the perfect child from the DNA of several accomplished people, but the embryo splits and two boys are born. Mary Ann Benedict, the twins' mother, believes Julius died at birth and is never told about Vincent. Julius is raised on a remote island by one of the scientists and becomes an optimistic, highly educated man with little knowledge of the world beyond it. Vincent is left at an orphanage in Los Angeles and becomes a short, cynical small-time criminal. On his thirty-fifth birthday Julius learns he has a brother and heads to Los Angeles, where he bails Vincent out of jail and protects him from loan sharks. Vincent doubts they are related, since the two look nothing alike.

- Twins was Arnold Schwarzenegger's first starring role in a major comedy, and because Universal saw casting him this way as a financial risk, he gave up his usual salary for a cut of the profits, as did co-star Danny DeVito and director Ivan Reitman.
- That profit-share gamble paid off hugely once Twins made $216 million on an $18 million budget, and Schwarzenegger later said in a 2025 interview with Andy Cohen that the film earned him more money than any other in his career.
