Biography

Virginia Madsen is an American actress who trained at the Ted Liss Acting Studio in Chicago before making her film debut in Class (1983). Her breakout came as Princess Irulan in Dune (1984), and she went on to a run of teen films, comedies and thrillers, earning critical acclaim and a Saturn Award for playing Helen Lyle in Candyman (1992). Her 1990s credits include The Prophecy (1995), Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), The Rainmaker (1997) and The Haunting (1999), and her performance as Maya Randall in Sideways (2004) brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Later films include A Prairie Home Companion (2006), The Number 23 (2007), The Haunting in Connecticut (2009), Joy (2015) and Prey for the Devil (2022). On television she had recurring roles on Moonlighting, Frasier, Monk, Hell on Wheels and Designated Survivor, and she formed the production company Title IX Productions.
