Plot summary
Augusta Iris has thrown Gordie, her artist husband, out of their home after his affair, and she stays in bed for weeks, saying almost nothing. Her son Henry, a teenager who left school and earns money mowing lawns, hears that his father is living with another woman and builds a strange sculpture in his father's studio to work out his rage. Henry's older brother Matthew, working toward a chemistry doctorate, returns to the house to comfort their mother. A health-food fanatic who keeps to himself, Matthew stays in his room rather than face Bette Mack, Henry's live-in girlfriend, who offers the household peppy advice and sharp criticism.
