Plot summary
Joy lives on Long Island with her children, her mother Terry, her grandmother Mimi and her ex-husband Tony, who sleeps in the basement. She works as an airline booking agent, keeps the books for her father Rudy's struggling garage, and is the person her extended family turns to. Her half-sister Peggy manages the garage and mocks her. Mimi and her friend Jackie urge Joy to keep inventing, and a conventional mop leaves her with an idea for a self-wringing version. Rudy's wealthy girlfriend Trudy agrees to invest, and a California company is contracted to make the parts. The company advises paying royalties to a Hong Kong man with a similar product to avoid a patent lawsuit. Joy also meets Neil Walker, a QVC executive who offers to sell her mops on television.
