Plot summary
Over the Christmas holidays, seventeen-year-old Ashley is looking after Luke Lerner, a precocious twelve-year-old, in his family's house. Luke has romantic feelings for her and makes an unsuccessful attempt to win her over while the two watch a horror film. Noises outside make Ashley uneasy, though the visitor at the door turns out to be Garrett, Luke's best friend. Then a window breaks upstairs, and the three of them find a brick inscribed with the words leave and die. Garrett panics and flees through the back door, leaving Ashley alone in the house with the boy she was hired to watch.
