Plot summary
Burning Bush, Texas has a mobile unit that screens women for breast cancer, and its funding has run out. The state health department gives Beth Humphrey two months to raise $25,000. She turns to the women who played with her on the town's high school team in 1980: Ginger Peabody, a car dealership owner, Florine Clarkston, a candidate for mayor, Roxie Rosales, and Clementine Winks. Beth proposes games against the Lady Armadillos, the reigning state champions, whose roster includes her daughter Jocelyn, and hopes admissions, concessions and a betting pool will bring in the money. Kayla Rash, the church secretary, wants the proceeds for the church and its marching band instead. A veterinarian named Paul Lazarini agrees to coach, and Beth calls the group the Hot Flashes.
