Plot summary
On the planet Zeist, five centuries before, Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez leads a rebellion against General Katana's rule. Ramírez uses the Quickening to bind himself to a fellow rebel, Connor MacLeod, so that not even death can separate them. Katana's troops crush the uprising and exile the two to Earth as immortals. By 1999 pollution ruins the ozone layer and millions die, among them Connor's wife Brenda Wyatt MacLeod. Mortal now, Connor supervises the scientific team of Dr. Allan Neyman, which builds an electromagnetic shield that saves Earth from radiation but leaves it dark, hot and humid. By 2024 David Blake's Shield Corporation charges countries for that protection. Louise Marcus, who leads an anti-shield group, asks the elderly Connor to help prove the ozone layer has recovered, and he refuses. From Zeist, General Katana sends two immortal assassins after him.

- Sean Connery agreed to come back for $3 million for six days of work, but would not come to the set or acknowledge the film's existence unless the money was placed in escrow first. His fee then rose to $3.5 million when footage of his opening scene was damaged and had to be redone.
- Russell Mulcahy was sidelined in the editing bay and during pick-up filming while parts of the story were drastically changed. Lambert threatened to quit but was pressured into finishing the job, and Mulcahy hated the final product so much that he walked out of the film's world premiere.
- With the sets and costumes already built, hyperinflation flared up again in Argentina and Panzer and Davis were spooked enough to freeze the production in January 1990; in February the completion bond company overruled them and ordered filming to begin within a month.
- Christopher Lambert and Michael Ironside struggled with their broadswords and injured each other during their fight scene, and John C. McGinley regretted pitching his character's voice as deep as possible in an effort to sound like Orson Welles.
- Kurt Woolner of Film Finance estimated that inflation alone cost Highlander II $3 million, and by the time Film Finance took control of the production it was already $10 million over budget.
- The theatrical release was so problematic that it prompted multiple revisions, its screenplay having contradicted the original film, and Mulcahy eventually made a director's cut of Highlander II that fans consider canon.
