Plot summary
Monte Wildhorn wrote Western novels, and now he drinks. His wife died of cancer six years earlier, and the pages stopped coming. His nephew Henry knows the owner of a lakeside cabin in Belle Isle and brings him there for the summer. Next door live Charlotte O'Neil and her three daughters: Willow, the eldest, who stays on her cell phone; Finn, the middle one, who is mischievous; and the youngest. A resident dies soon after Monte arrives, and a neighbor asks him to read a eulogy that was prepared in advance. Finn then wants three new words to use with her mother, and writing lessons. He makes up a story for her on the spot.
