Plot summary
Bakersfield, California, 1982. Debbie McCuan's stepmother, Mary Ann Barbour, is trying to take the McCuans' daughters from them, and she accuses Alvin and Debbie McCuan of abusing the girls. The McCuans ask their friends Scott and Brenda Kniffen to testify for them, and the Kniffens agree. Barbour then tells Child Protective Services that both couples run a child sex ring, saying children were hung from hooks and tortured in the Kniffen home. One social worker is skeptical, but her supervisor holds that children do not lie, and warrants are issued. Brenda is arrested at home while her sons Brian and Brandon are taken into protective custody; Scott is arrested at his workplace. Both say they are innocent, and nobody believes them.
