Plot summary
Fred Chaney is a bachelor who inherits two things from his late mother: one half of a stock brokerage firm and a buck-toothed horse named Don. Don is a talking horse who once belonged to Fred's father, and he can speak with other animals too. Fred's stepfather, Walter Sawyer, offers a small sum for Fred's share of the business. Fred refuses and takes an office at the firm as a broker instead, and Don moves into his apartment. When Don overhears a stock tip and calls Fred with it, Fred acts on the advice and grows rich, moving into a penthouse and buying a sports car.

- Joan Rivers was originally cast as Fred Chaney, the role that went to Bobcat Goldthwait, and Elliott Gould was the original voice of Don the horse.
- John Candy was hired to re-record the voice of Don the horse but ignored the rewritten script and improvised the dialogue instead.
- After a poor test screening of Hot to Trot, Don the horse's half of the script was rewritten by Andy Breckman, later the creator of Monk, to make the film funnier.
- Bobcat Goldthwait wrote "Why would I do this?" on the cover of the Hot to Trot script, and his manager answered by writing a dollar sign.
