Plot summary
In Daggerhorn, a village at the forest's edge, the people have long kept a truce with the Wolf, leaving it a monthly animal sacrifice. Valerie, the daughter of Cesaire and Suzette, is promised to Henry Lazar, the blacksmith's son, but she loves Peter, a woodcutter, and the two plan to run away together. Then the Wolf kills Valerie's older sister Lucie, breaking the truce. The preacher Father Auguste sends for Father Solomon, a famous witch hunter. Solomon warns the villagers that the werewolf takes human form by day and could be any one of them, and his men seal off Daggerhorn.
