Ed Lauter
Biography
Ed Lauter was an American actor who worked on more than 200 film and television productions over a career of more than 40 years, usually as police officers and military men, or other heavies. A native of Long Beach, New York, he worked as a stand-up comedian before his first acting role, a minor part in the 1968 Broadway production of The Great White Hope. He made his screen debut in a 1971 episode of Mannix, and his first theatrical film, the Western Dirty Little Billy, came in 1972. His prominent films included The Longest Yard (1974), Breakheart Pass (1975), King Kong (1976), Family Plot (1976), Magic (1978), Cujo (1983), My Blue Heaven (1990), The Rocketeer (1991), Seraphim Falls (2007) and The Artist (2011). On television he played Martin Stillman, the villainous sheriff, in How the West Was Won, and guested on The X-Files, Miami Vice and ER. He died in 2013.
