Biography

Dean Stockwell was an American actor with a seven-decade career. Born in North Hollywood to a family of performers, he began as a child actor at MGM in Anchors Aweigh (1945), Gentleman's Agreement (1947), and The Boy with Green Hair (1948). As an adult he starred in the Broadway adaptation of Compulsion and its 1959 film version, sharing the Cannes Film Award for Best Actor. He won two Best Actor prizes at Cannes for Long Day's Journey into Night (1962) and received a Golden Globe nomination for Sons and Lovers (1960). His later supporting work included Dune (1984), Paris, Texas (1984), Blue Velvet (1986), Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988), and Married to the Mob (1988), the last bringing an Academy Award nomination. He also appeared in Air Force One (1997) and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000), and on television played Al Calavicci in Quantum Leap and Brother Cavil in Battlestar Galactica. He retired from acting.

    Stockwell took the part of Judd Steiner in the 1957 Broadway version of Compulsion, drawn from the Leopold and Loeb story. He played Steiner again in the 1959 movie, and he, Orson Welles and Bradford Dillman split the 1959 Cannes Film Award for Best Actor.

  2. Behind the camera

    In the mid-1970s, Stockwell created the artwork for Neil Young's album American Stars 'n Bars, which was released in 1976.
