Plot summary

Lola James dances at a strip club at night and works a drugstore counter by day, holding down both jobs so she can save enough to move to Texas, where her nine-year-old genderfluid brother Arlo could attend art school. Mona, their mother, is fanatically religious and directs homophobic abuse at Arlo when he shows interest in makeup. Lola's former boyfriend Malachi, who also deals her cocaine, keeps their relationship turbulent. After Lola witnesses Mona sexually abusing Arlo, she packs their bags and moves them in with Babina, her coworker and best friend, and Babina's mother Pearl.
