Plot summary
The dealership in a small Texas town hires a drifter, Harry Madox, as a used car salesman. He notices Gloria Harper, who works in the loan office, and the wooden fruit on her shoes. Dolly Harshaw, the owner's wife, flirts with him, and they begin an affair. Harry learns that the bank's staff are volunteer firemen and its cameras do not work. He starts a fire in a nearby building to draw them away and robs the bank. He goes into the burning building to rescue a homeless man. The sheriff suspects Harry of the robbery and arrests him. The stolen money's serial numbers were recorded, and Dolly Harshaw offers him an alibi.

- Don Johnson recalled that three days before shooting began, Dennis Hopper called the cast together and scrapped Mike Figgis's heist script called The Hot Spot, handing them instead a script written for Robert Mitchum in the '60s and based on the book Hell Hath No Fury.
- Virginia Madsen wore a negligee in a bedroom scene that originally called for her to appear naked, saying the nudity was weak storywise and did not let the audience undress her; Dennis Hopper later admitted she was right.
- Dennis Hopper said Don Johnson turned up with two bodyguards, a cook, a trainer and a helicopter pilot, and flew to and from the set by helicopter with two drivers, a secretary and his own hair, make-up and wardrobe people.
- Dennis Hopper felt Don Johnson and Virginia Madsen were not keen enough in promoting the film: he said Johnson would do nothing until he read the reviews, while Johnson said he could not promote it because he was shooting Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man.
- Virginia Madsen was body doubled by Heather Cruikshank for part of the skinny-dipping scene; Cruikshank was working in a strip club when she was cast.
