Biography

Peter O'Toole was an English and Irish actor who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and became known as a Shakespearean actor on the stage. He gained fame in the West End in 1959 and in 1963 played Hamlet for the National Theatre's first production. His film breakthrough came as T. E. Lawrence in David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia (1962), which earned him the first of eight Best Actor Oscar nominations and a BAFTA Award. He was nominated again for Becket (1964), The Lion in Winter (1968), Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), The Ruling Class (1972), The Stunt Man (1980), My Favorite Year (1982), and Venus (2006). He also appeared in How to Steal a Million (1966), What's New Pussycat? (1965), The Last Emperor (1987), Troy (2004), and Stardust (2007). He voiced Anton Ego in Ratatouille (2007) and won a Primetime Emmy Award for Joan of Arc. In 2002 he received an Academy Honorary Award.

Did you know?!

  1. A first

O'Toole played Henry II again in The Lion in Winter in 1968, with Katharine Hepburn, and earned another Oscar nomination. That made him only the second actor nominated twice for the same character in two different films.

  2. Big break

In November 1960, O'Toole was picked to play T. E. Lawrence, the title hero of Sir David Lean's epic Lawrence of Arabia, after Albert Finney reportedly declined the role.

  3. A role that slipped away

Peter O'Toole turned down the chance to play the lead in The Cardinal, the 1963 film, so he did not take that part.

  4. Early training

O'Toole won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where he studied from 1952 to 1954. Albert Finney, Alan Bates and Brian Bedford were his classmates there.
