Andrew Keir

Biography

Andrew Keir was a Scottish actor who became known for his work in Hammer Film Productions' films of the 1960s, with a career on stage, television and screen that ran from the 1940s to the 1990s. Born in Shotts, Lanarkshire, he left school at 14 to work in the coal mine before taking up acting by chance with an amateur group at the Miners' Welfare Hall, leading to the Unity Theatre in Glasgow and nine years with the Citizens' Theatre. He made his film debut in 1950 and played Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in Cleopatra (1963). He originated Thomas Cromwell in A Man for All Seasons in 1960. His most prominent Hammer role was Bernard Quatermass in Quatermass and the Pit (1967), and he also appeared in Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966) and Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (1966). Later films included The Thirty Nine Steps (1978) and Rob Roy (1995), his final major role. He died in 1997.

First role
Keir began acting by accident. While visiting a friend at the Miners' Welfare Hall, he was asked to fill in for a missing cast member in an amateur production, taking the small part of a farmer.
A role that slipped away
Keir was called in to star in Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971) after the original star, Peter Cushing, pulled out.
A first
Keir took on the part of Quatermass one last time in 1996, for the BBC Radio serial The Quatermass Memoirs. It was his final professional engagement.
