Plot summary
David Balfour travels to the House of Shaws with a letter of introduction from his late father, and his uncle Ebenezer receives him without warmth. The neighbors dislike Ebenezer, and David starts asking questions about the family's affairs. Ebenezer arranges for David to meet the sea captain Hoseason, who lures him aboard his ship and has him shanghaied at Ebenezer's urging. At sea, David is told he will be sold into indentured servitude. When a fog descends and the ship collides with a small boat, the only survivor brought aboard is Alan Breck Stewart, who pays for his passage. The captain plots to kill Alan for the rest of his money, and David warns him.

Director Stevenson wanted to film the assassination of Colin Roy Campbell at the real spot a few miles from Ballachulish, but the original location was now covered by a forest of Norwegian pines, so he shot it on the slopes of Ardgour, about twelve miles away.- Peter O'Toole got a small role in the film at the suggestion of Peter Finch. It was O'Toole's first released film, and he would shortly become a sensation of the London stage in The Long and the Short and the Tall.
- Many people advised director Stevenson to put a woman in the story, but Disney resisted, saying that would not be true to the novel.
