Plot summary
Jim serves as a promising young officer in the English merchant marine under Captain Charles Marlow until an injury puts him ashore at Java. Fit again, he takes the first berth offered, aboard the SS Patna, a dilapidated freighter packed with hundreds of Muslims sailing to Mecca on pilgrimage. When a storm threatens the leaking vessel, the crew panic, abandon the passengers and take to the lifeboats, and Jim goes with them. In port they find the Patna has survived and is already docked. The others disappear, but Jim stays to confess at an official inquiry and loses his sailing papers. Racked by guilt, he becomes a drifter.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Richard Brooks, who wrote, directed and produced Lord Jim, optioned Joseph Conrad's novel in 1957 and first sought Albert Finney as Jim, Toshiro Mifune as The General and Laurence Olivier as Gentleman Brown. Olivier turned the part down because he did not want to travel to Cambodia for several weeks.
- Peter O'Toole described the three months the cast and crew spent filming Lord Jim in Cambodia as dreadful, "sheer hell" and "a nightmare", with everyone knee deep in lizards and horrible insects.
- Cambodian head of state and former king Norodom Sihanouk disliked the film's portrayal of Cambodia, and by 1966 countered it by making his own film, Apsara, which was his first feature-length and color film.
