Plot summary
Wall is an English village whose old stone wall opens onto Stormhold, the magical kingdom next door, and a guard keeps villagers from crossing. Tristan Thorn and Victoria watch a star fall beyond the wall, and Tristan promises to bring it back in return for her hand. The guard blocks his way, but a Babylon candle his mother left him carries him to the star, which is a woman named Yvaine. He fastens a magic chain on her to lead her home. In Stormhold, the dying King has thrown a ruby into the sky for his sons to find, and three ancient witch sisters want the heart of a fallen star to restore their youth.

- After watching an early cut, the British pop band Take That wrote and recorded "Rule the World" for the film, featuring Gary Barlow on lead vocals. Released as a single in the United Kingdom on 22 October 2007, it peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart.
- Discussions about a film version took place between Gaiman, the director Terry Gilliam and the producer Matthew Vaughn, but Gilliam dropped out following his involvement with The Brothers Grimm and not wanting to do another fairy tale.
- Sarah Michelle Gellar was offered the role of Yvaine but turned it down, not wanting to be apart from her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. while he was filming in the U.S.
- The design of the witches' lair was inspired by the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles in France, but with black instead of white and silver instead of gold.
- Stardust was blocked from release in China, kept out by additional restrictions on foreign films on top of the existing quota system limiting non-Chinese films.
- The role of Quintus was originally given to the comedian Noel Fielding, but due to health issues he had to drop out and was replaced by another comedian, Adam Buxton.
