Plot summary
Early in 1939, before the Second World War begins, the English hunter Sir Robert Hunter levels a hunting rifle at Adolf Hitler and hesitates. An SS guard spots and overpowers him, and the Gestapo tortures him for a confession that his aim was an intellectual exercise. Because Hunter holds high status in Britain, his captors mean to shoot him and call it a hunting accident, but since his body shows clear signs of torture they throw him off a cliff instead. He survives the fall and returns to England, helped by a friendly sailor and a German fisherman. There German agents are on his trail and the Nazi government has asked for his extradition, so he goes underground in the English countryside.

- Although the BBC judged the finished film good enough for an international cinema release, it stopped all UK screenings and banned future ones because the crew had been paid at television rates rather than cinema rates.
- Geoffrey Household said he always intended the protagonist's target to be Hitler, but deliberately left him unnamed in the book so it could be either Hitler or Stalin, saying things were a bit tricky at the time.
