Plot summary
In the early 1900s, Henslowe Fisk lives under the eye of his difficult father, Horatio. The family lost its younger son, Harrington, in the Second Anglo-Boer War, and then Horatio's wife. Housekeeper Mrs Brimley has lost her husband as well. Fisk Junior's Thursday visits to his father are reluctant. Wanting an outing for the old man, he brings him to a swami's lecture on the transmigration of souls. The new local clergyman, Dean Spanley, is there, and Fisk Junior meets him again at his father's club.
