Plot summary
When a prostitute who also worked as a German agent is found dead in German-occupied Warsaw in 1942, Major Grau of the Wehrmacht's Abwehr opens a case. A witness reports seeing a German general leave the building after a scream. Grau's evidence points toward three of them: von Seidlitz-Gabler, his chief of staff Kahlenberge, and Tanz, a decorated officer favored by Adolf Hitler. None of the three has an alibi, and all stay clear of him. In July 1944 Grau and the three generals are in Paris together, where senior army officers are conspiring against Hitler. Tanz now commands an SS panzer division. Corporal Kurt Hartmann serves as the driver for Tanz, and Ulrike, the daughter of General von Seidlitz-Gabler, is close to Hartmann.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Both O'Toole and Sharif were hesitant to take their roles, but felt they owed it to producer Sam Spiegel for making them international stars with Lawrence of Arabia, so they did so anyway.
- The production was granted rare permission to shoot its first section behind the Iron Curtain on location in Warsaw, and the Polish People's Army provided some 200 soldiers as well as weapons, tanks and other vehicles.
- Because they were held to the terms of an old contract agreement, O'Toole and Sharif's combined salaries were reportedly less than the sum paid to Donald Pleasence.
