Miles Malleson
Biography
Miles Malleson was an English actor and dramatist who became a recognizable face in British comedies released between the 1930s and 1960s. Born in South Croydon, he first took to the stage as a Cambridge undergraduate in 1909, playing Sosias in a production of Aristophanes' The Wasps, then turned professional in 1911 after training at Herbert Beerbohm Tree's drama school, later renamed RADA. He also wrote screenplays, among them Nell Gwyn (1934), and he contributed to The Thief of Bagdad (1940), in which he played the Sultan. His comic turns included the hearse driver and bus conductor of Dead of Night (1945), a hangman in Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) and Dr. Chasuble in The Importance of Being Earnest (1952). Late in his career he made cameos for Hammer, notably a substantial role in The Brides of Dracula (1960) as a local doctor. He translated and adapted several Moliere plays and died in 1969.

First role
Malleson first acted on stage while still an undergraduate, in November 1909. He played Sosias, a slave, in the Cambridge Greek Play production of Aristophanes' The Wasps at the New Theatre, Cambridge.

Malleson's acting training took place at Herbert Beerbohm Tree's Academy of Dramatic Art, an institution that would go on to be renamed the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Malleson also wrote screenplays for numerous films. In a few of them, including Nell Gwyn (1934) and The Thief of Bagdad (1940), he appeared in minor roles.
