Coral Browne
Biography
Coral Browne was an Australian actress born in Melbourne who started on the stage and later worked in film, television, and radio. After training at the National Gallery Art School, she made her professional debut in 1931 in Melbourne in Loyalties, then moved to England and became a leading stage actress, including as Jack Buchanan's leading lady in The Last of Mrs Cheyney and Lady Frederick. She was a regular at London's Savoy and later staged The Man Who Came to Dinner there. Her film work began in 1936. She appeared in The Ruling Class (1972), Auntie Mame (1958), and The Killing of Sister George (1968). She won a BAFTA Television Award for Best Actress in 1984 for An Englishman Abroad (1983), in which she played herself, and earned a London Evening Standard British Film Award for Dreamchild (1985). She died in 1991.

First role
Coral Browne was cast in her first professional role at 17, as Margaret Orme in Loyalties at Melbourne's Comedy Theatre on 2 May 1931, after Gregan McMahon snapped her up.
A change of course
At 21, Browne emigrated to England with £50 and a letter of introduction to actress Marie Tempest from Gregan McMahon, and there became established as a stage actress.
Getting ready for a role
Touring the Soviet Union in 1958 with a Shakespeare Memorial Theatre production of Hamlet, Browne met the spy Guy Burgess. Alan Bennett turned that meeting into a television movie script, An Englishman Abroad, and Browne played herself in it.
