Philippe Noiret
Biography
Philippe Noiret was a French actor whose career began on the stage before he became a familiar face in French cinema. Born in Lille, he failed his school exams and turned to theater, studying at the Centre Dramatique de l'Ouest and then touring for seven years with the Théâtre National Populaire, where he also developed a nightclub comedy act in a duo with Jean-Pierre Darras. His screen debut, uncredited, came in Gigi in 1949, and he returned to film in Agnès Varda's La Pointe Courte (1955) and Zazie dans le Métro (1960). Usually cast as an Everyman, he won César Awards for Le Vieux Fusil in 1976 and Life and Nothing But in 1990, and a BAFTA for playing Alfredo in Cinema Paradiso (1988). He also appeared in Hollywood-financed pictures such as Topaz (1969) and The Night of the Generals (1967), and had more than 100 film roles by his death in 2006.

Own stunts
Riding was a passion Noiret shared with fellow actors Jean Rochefort and Jean-Pierre Marielle, and he often found comfort in the saddle.
